Neo Yokio: Funny or Trash?

In the light of recent presentations revolving comedy, I had to talk about Neo Yokio. This show, was a truly wild ride and I have to admit... I enjoyed it. However, when I mention it to anyone, I have met with responses similar to: " we do not talk about that trash." Neo Yokio is an American-Japanese anime starring celebrities like Jaden Smith and Jude Law. Nonetheless, in the eyes of avid anime watchers, Neo Yokio is not welcome. 

Perhaps I am a rare specimen, in my personal experience with anything I try to analyze what the objective of the work is. So Neo Yokio was created as a piece of comedy, but anyone I have talked to about it say they hate it because it is stupid. To me, that was the point of the show. The show revolves around main character Kaz Kaan, who is at the top of the social class and struggles to find any joy in life. While at first glance the subject looks like a serious one, the way Kaz is so exaggerated makes the subject funny. It also goes in part with my previous post. While this is an American creation and drawn by a Japanese studio, this just means that we are going through a case of globalization that I want to see more of. The story takes place in New York, which has turned into Neo Yokio.  This show has a nod to several anime tropes such as mechs and magical aspects of fantasy while living in a modern "bougie" city. While I personally love the stupidity of this show, I have to admit that it lacks real substance. I watched it all the way to the end due to the fact that I was so in love with its combination of semi-futuristic elements and renaissance structures and lifestyle. However, the story lacks real substance and hook. It just seemed like looking into the lifestyle of a rich boy in a fun city, but nothing beyond that. Sometimes there were funny existential remarks that were relatable to young adults struggling to discover themselves.
